What I Ate: 6/30/2009

  • 1 hard-boiled egg and 1 slice American cheese (130 kcals, 10g protein)
  • 1 hard-boiled egg and 1 slice American cheese (130 kcals, 10g protein)
  • 1 scoop Matrix Perfect Chocolate protein supplement - a new one to try! - in Starbucks grande iced decaf americano. Matrix was okay in this, but a little thicker than I like. It's a LOT cheaper than Isopure - $19.99 instead of $43.99. (120 kcals, 23g protein)
  • 10 medium shrimp (85 kcals, 18g protein) with 1/2 soy chorizo link (70 kcals, 6g protein) and 1 oz. tomato sauce (20 kcals, 0g protein)
  • 1/2 slice American cheese (30 kcals, 2g protein) and 0.5 oz. Trader Joe's Marcona almonds (95 kcals, 3g protein)

Total: 680 kcals, 72g protein, 42.4% kcals from protein.

I think I'm going to go back to a lower-calorie eating plan with tinier portions over the next few days and see what happens. I went to my surgeon for my 2-month follow-up today. I'm more confused than ever about how I'm supposed to be eating. And today was a bad food day. Argh. :-(

What I Ate: 6/29/2009

  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein powder in Publick Cup iced decaf coffee (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 2 turkey-cheese roll-ups with about 1 tbsp. spicy brown mustard (about 125 kcals, 14g protein)
  • Smart Tenders "Savory Chick'n" soy chicken strips. Unlike the tempeh strips, these were very tasty! (130 kcals, 16g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein powder in iced decaf coffee from Starbucks, this time with sugar-free caramel syrup (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • About 1 1/4 cups edamame beans in pods. As Rach would say, "Yumm-o!" (about 120 kcals, about 11g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein powder in homemade iced decaf coffee (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 3 Bariatric Advantage chocolate calcium citrate chewy bites (45 kcals, 0g protein)

Total: 750 kcals, 116g protein, 61.9% kcals from protein.

As I mentioned in my last post, I went to NJ today to get my car back - finally!

Sunday, June 28, 2009

What I Ate: 6/28/2009

  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein in a grande Starbucks iced decaf americano (115 kcals, 26g protein)
  • 1 Primal Strips soy jerky, Texas BBQ flavor (81 kcals, 10g protein)
  • 1 Primal Strips seitan jerky, mesquite lime flavor (74 kcals, 10g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein in a grande iced decaf coffee from a generic place (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 1 Primal Strips seitan jerky, teriyaki flavor (99 kcals, 11g protein)
  • 1 medium peach (about 60 kcals, about 1.5g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein in homemade iced decaf coffee (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 0.5 oz. Trader Joe's marcona almonds with rosemary - I noticed that my weight loss went well over the last couple of days eating more, so I decided to tack these on at the end of the day! (95 kcals, 3g protein)

Total: 744 kcals, 111.5g protein, 59.9% kcals from protein.

I spent all day traveling back from Seattle, so no exercise today. And because I have to drive to Jersey to pick up my car tomorrow, probably none then either unless I get back earlier than expected. But back in full force on Tuesday!

What I Ate: 6/27/2009

Oh, I ate so much today! I feel gross, but I know all the choices I made were excellent except for the nuts. I do, however, have a very hard time stopping when I start to feel full, but I don't eat so much that I vomit or get food stuck (still haven't experienced that) or feel pain of any kind. I just feel a little too full.
  • 1 hard-boiled egg (70 kcals, 6g protein) with 1 Primal Strips soy jerky, Texas BBQ flavor (81 kcals, 10g protein)
  • Fillings of some kind of Mediterranean pita sandwiches- fortunately the sauce was on the side. I had about 3.5 oz. grilled chicken that was cooked with oregano and 1 thin slice of tomato, a bit of red onion, and a tiny bit of lettuce (about 160 kcals, about 26g protein)
  • 11 almonds (77 kcals, 3.3g protein) and 8 cashews (72 kcals, 2g protein) with 3 strawberries (25 kcals, 0g protein) and about 1/2 wedge of cantaloupe (20 kcals, 0g protein)
  • About 3 oz. pork loin (about 200 kcals, about 24g protein), 3 grilled shrimp (about 30 kcals, about 4g protein), and 3 asparagus stalks (25 kcals, 0g protein). I think this probably had some oil thrown in there, but not too much. I also had a negligible amount of watermelon that I have no idea how to estimate. It was like, a bite of watermelon. This was at the fancy dinner that ended the awesome conference I attended in Seattle.
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein supplement in cold decaf coffee (110 kcals, 25g protein)

Total: 870 kcals (!!!!!), 100.3g protein, 46.1% kcals from protein.

This was a lot of calories for me - wowza! Scary. Tomorrow it should be nice and low because I'm going to be living on Primal Strips and protein shakes all day. I am a little happy that my calories from protein percentage is still over 40 despite the high-calorie day.

I did at least go for a nice early-morning gym venture today, which is cool because I had to get up early in order to fit anything in. I walked for about 30 minutes and burned about 240 calories.

What I Ate: 6/25/2009-6/26/2009

I'm at a conference in Seattle this weekend, so I'm reporting back for the past 2 days. I spent most of yesterday traveling across the country, stopping in Detroit, and then heading straight from the Seattle-Tacoma airport to the conference. After that, I was too exhausted to use my computer!

Thursday, June 25:
  • 2 turkey/cheese roll-ups (just a slice of deli turkey breast with 1/2 slice American cheese) with about 2 tbsp. spicy brown mustard (about 125 kcals, 14g protein)
  • 6 sesame garlic tempeh strips - these were NOT "pouchworthy"! They tasted a lot like cold, salty, soggy french fries. They're probably tastier if eaten directly after cooking them?(108 kcals, 14.4g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein powder (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 1 oz. dry roasted peanuts - courtesy of Northwest Airlines (140 kcals, 6g protein)
  • About 3.5 oz. grilled chicken and a bit of greek salad (about 170 kcals, about 28g protein)
  • 2 small slices of cantaloupe (about 35 kcals, 0g protein) and 2 strawberries (about 15kcals, 0g protein)

Total: 703 kcals, 87.4g protein, 49.7% kcals from protein.

Friday, June 26:

  • 1 Primal Strips seitan jerky, Thai Peanut flavor (74 kcals, 10g protein) with 1/2 kiwi (25 kcals, 0g protein), 2 large cubes of papaya (about 25 kcals, 0g protein), and 2 slices of mango (about 40 kcals, 0g protein)
  • Fillings from a sandwich - 2 slices turkey, 2 slices provolone (probably should have taken this off, but this was SO good), lettuce, and tomato (about 225 kcals, about 20g protein)
  • About 1 oz. almonds and cashews (about 80 kcals, about 2.5g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein supplement (110 kcals, 25g protein) with 2 strawberries (about 15 kcals, 0g protein) and 2 slices of mango (about 40 kcals, 0g protein)
  • 1 Primal Strips seitan jerky, Mesquite Lime flavor (74 kcals, 10g protein)

Total: 818 kcals, 92.5g protein, 45.2% kcals from protein.

Yeah, yeah, yeah - I should slow my roll on the fruit. I'll do this one more day and go back to my normal asceticism. But...I did work out today! A bit over 40 minutes on the treadmill for a supposed burn of 315 kcals.

Thursday, June 25, 2009

What I Ate: 6/24/2009

  • 1 sugar-free popsicle (5 kcals, 0g protein)
  • 1 hard-boiled egg with 1 slice of American cheese (130 kcals, 10g protein)
  • 1 Fuze Pomegranate/Acai Berry slenderize (25 kcals, 0g protein)
  • 2 turkey/cheese roll-ups (just a slice of deli turkey breast with 1/2 slice American cheese) with about 2 tbsp. spicy brown mustard (about 125 kcals, 14g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein supplement in large iced decaf from Publick Cup/Koffee Too (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 1 link of Light Life Smart Sausages soy "chorizo" (140 kcals, 12g protein)
  • 2 turkey/cheese roll-ups (just a slice of deli turkey breast with 1/2 slice American cheese) with about 2 tbsp. spicy brown mustard - yup, repeated this meal because it was that good (about 125 kcals, 14g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein supplement in venti iced decaf from Starbucks (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 2 Bariatric Advantage chocolate calcium citrate chewy bites (30 kcals, 0g protein)

Total: 800 kcals, 100g protein, 50.0% kcals from protein.

Yesss! I hit the 800-calorie mark for the first time today. I will admit that I'm a little scared by it, but according to the Bariatric Eating crew, I should be getting at least 800 calories a day. I didn't gym it today, but I did go for a walk this afternoon.

Tuesday, June 23, 2009

What I Ate: 6/23/2009

  • 1 Bariatric advantage chocolate calcium citrate chewy bite (15 kcals, 0g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein supplement in large Publick Cup iced decaf coffee (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 1 hard-boiled egg with 1 oz. ABP herb cream cheese and 1/2 slice American cheese - lots of fat (175 kcals, 11g protein)
  • 3 oz. chicken "saag" (120 kcals, 16g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein supplement in large Publick Cup iced decaf coffee (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 1 teriyaki-flavored "Primal Strip" seitan jerky (99 kcals, 10g protein)
  • 1 1/2 cups edamame in pods (about 100 kcals, 8g protein)

Total: 729 kcals, 95g protein, 52.1% kcals from protein.

Back to the gym today, but taking it easier. Treadmill, 35 minutes, 282 calories supposedly burned. I also did my resistance training, which was nice to get back into.

Monday, June 22, 2009

What I Ate: 6/22/2009

  • 1 hard-boiled egg with 1 oz. herb-flavored neufchatel cheese from Au Bon Pain. I hate that overpriced place, but I left my house keys in DC and had to make do. (144 kcals, 9g protein)
  • The other hard-boiled egg and the other 1 oz. of the cream cheese from ABP. The eggs come in a pack of 2 and there are 2 oz. cream cheese in each serving (144 kcals, 9g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein supplement in a venti iced decaf americano with sugar-free vanilla syrup from Starbucks (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 0.5 oz. Trader Joe's marcona almonds with rosemary - I added extra rosemary too! (about 95 kcals, about 3g protein)
  • 10 small paprika shrimp with soy-ginger vinaigrette (about 100 kcals, about 18g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein powder in homemade iced decaf coffee (110 kcals, 25g protein)

Total: 703 kcals, 89g protein, 50.6% kcals from protein.

I was too stressed to work out today.

Sunday, June 21, 2009

What I Ate: 6/21/2009

  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein supplement in iced decaf coffee (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 3 oz. Monica's chili (120 kcals, 15g protein)
  • About 5 oz. sauteed salmon with gorgonzola cheese from Busboys & Poets. This was part of a salmon and asparagus salad that came with caramelized onions, cherry tomatoes, and balsamic vinaigrette as well. In the spirit of "protein first," I ate one asparagus stalk but otherwise just ate the salmon and some of the cheese. I definitely ate too much and this made me feel HORRIBLE - I was nauseous and had to leave the table twice, though I didn't get "sick" if you know what I mean. I think it was a light form of dumping. Granted, there was no sugar in it, but maybe it was from the fat in the cheese and whatever they used to cook the salmon. I have totally learned my lesson! Ugh...it's hours later and my stomach is still iffy. (about 350 kcals, about 35g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein supplement in iced decaf coffee (110 kcals, 25g protein)

Total: 690 kcals, 100g protein, 58.0% kcals from protein.

I had *no* physical activity today. I'm thinking that after this trip, I will have gained a pound or two.

What I Ate: 6/20/2009

  • 1 hard-boiled egg with 1/2 slice American cheese (100 kcals, 8g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein in large iced decaf with Splenda, this time from Corner Bakery at the National Press Club (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • About 8 oz. miso soup (about 80 kcals, about 2g protein)
  • About 2 cups edamame in pods (about 175 kcals, about 15g protein)
  • 1 serving of sashimi (2 slices octopus, 1 slice salmon, 2 slices swordfish, 2 slices whitefish) with ginger and wasabi in soy sauce (about 120 kcals, about 15g protein)

Total: 585 kcals, 65g protein, 44.4% kcals from protein.

Spent most of my day at a conference in DC. I think some of my numbers may be off, but I tried to overestimate calories and underestimate protein if I wasn't sure about an item's nutritional value. Today's Asian specialties (miso soup, edamame, sashimi) were from Asia Nine, a pretty upscale restaurant in DC's Penn Quarter. Raku was both cheaper and better.

Friday, June 19, 2009

What I Ate: 6/19/2009

  • 1 hard-boiled egg with 1/2 slice American cheese (100 kcals, 8g protein) with 1/3 Fuji apple, peeled and sliced (25 kcals, 0g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein supplement in a large decaf iced coffee (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 3 oz. chicken "saag" (about 100 kcals, about 17g protein)
  • 3 oz. Monica's chili! (about 120 kcals, about 15g protein)
  • About 1.5 cups edamame in pods (about 100 kcals, about 8g protein) and 1 small serving sashimi (salmon, white fish, and octopus) with ginger (about 90 kcals, about 15g protein) - this meal was from Raku in DC (Dupont Circle) and it was sumptuous. I've passed the place many times but had never eaten there, but now I'm a big fan.
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein supplement in a large decaf iced coffee (110 kcals, 25g protein)
Total: About 755 kcals, about 113g protein, about 59.9% kcals from protein.

No workout today. In DC for a conference.

Thursday, June 18, 2009

What I Ate: 6/18/2009

  • 1 scrambled egg with 1/2 slice American cheese (100 kcals, 8g protein) with 1/3 sliced and peeled medium Fuji apple (about 25 kcals, 0g protein)
  • 2 Trader Joe's chicken sausage links (110 kcals, 14g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein supplement in a large decaf iced coffee (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 3 oz. chicken "saag" (about 100 kcals, about 17g protein)
  • 3 oz. simply sauteed paprika shrimp in a sweet ginger-soy vinaigrette over romaine (about 100 kcals, 16.5g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein supplement in a large decaf iced coffee (110 kcals, 25g protein)

Total: 655 kcals, 105.5g protein, 64.4% kcals from protein.

As promised, back to the gym today. 65 minutes on the treadmill for a supposed burn of 512 calories.

Wednesday, June 17, 2009

What I Ate: 6/17/2009

  • 1 scrambled egg with 1/2 slice American cheese (100 kcals, 8g protein) with 1/3 sliced and peeled medium Fuji apple (about 25 kcals, 0g protein)
  • 2 Trader Joe's chicken sausage links (110 kcals, 14g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein supplement in a large decaf iced coffee (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 3 oz. Monica's chili! with a dollop of nonfat Fage yogurt (about 140 kcals, about 17g protein)
  • 3.5 oz. chicken "saag" - heavy on the chicken in this serving, with about 2.5 oz. chicken breast and 1 oz. spinach sauce, and seasonings. I think that if I have leftover spinach sauce, I'm going to add shrimp to it for shrimp "saag." And...wow. This was even more delicious than yesterday. I might have to make it again and try to keep track of what I put in it so I can share the recipe! (about 120 kcals, about 21g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein supplement in a large decaf iced coffee (110 kcals, 25g protein)

Total: 715 kcals, 110g protein, 61.5% kcals from protein.

No gym trip today, but I'll be back there tomorrow. I decided to go get my hair cut after class instead, and I am *loving* the new look!

What I Ate: 6/16/2009

  • 1 scrambled egg with 1/2 slice American cheese (100 kcals, 8g protein) with 2 large strawberries (about 20 kcals, 0g protein)
  • 1/2 hard-boiled egg (35 kcals, 3g protein), 1/2 slice American cheese (30 kcals, 2g protein), 1 Trader Joe's chicken sausage link (55 kcals, 7g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein supplement in a large decaf iced coffee (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 3 oz. Monica's chili! (about 120 kcals, about 15g protein)
  • About 1/2 cup chicken "saag" - my very inauthentic, but very delicious, version of the Indian dish. I overate...again. I ate off a plate that was too big. (very roughly 75 kcals, about 12g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein supplement in a large decaf iced coffee (110 kcals, 25g protein)

Total: 655 kcals, 97g protein, 59.2% kcals from protein.

Today was my lighter workout day: I went 35 minutes on the elliptical and did some upper-body resistance training.

Monday, June 15, 2009

What I Ate: 6/15/2009

  • 1 scrambled egg with 1/2 slice American cheese (100 kcals, 8g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein supplement in a large decaf iced coffee (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 1/2 hard-boiled egg (35 kcals, 3g protein), 1/2 slice American cheese (30 kcals, 2g protein), 1 Trader Joe's chicken sausage link (55 kcals, 7g protein)
  • 3 oz. teriyaki chicken breast (130 kcals, 24g protein)
  • 3 oz. Monica's chili! (about 120 kcals, about 15g protein)
  • 5 large strawberries - too many! argh (about 40 kcals, 0g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein supplement in homemade instant decaf (110 kcals, 25g protein)

Total: 730 kcals, 109g protein, 59.7% kcals from protein.

Operation Calorie Increase began today (yeah, I know that's cheesy but I'm on a sugar low from those strawberries and my mind isn't working great - I will have a couple in the morning tomorrow!) I'm aiming for as close to 800 calories as possible. BariatricEating.com suggests 800-1000 calories in the losing stage to avoid "starvation mode," and while I'm not sure if I should be worried about that, I am going to try upping my calories this week and perhaps lowering them next week, just to keep my body guessing. I felt like I was eating all day today. It was intense.

I had a great workout today though! I've decided to get more into the treadmill in an effort to build up my leg strength. Even though I supposedly burned 502 calories in my 65-minute walk, I know I was working a lot harder on the treadmill than I usually do on the elliptical. (I was dripping with sweat.) I played with the speeds and the incline to give it more the feel of outdoor walking. I think I'm going to alternate days on treadmill and lighter elliptical days, just to give my legs a chance to recover from the more vigorous treadmill workouts.

What I Ate: 6/14/2009

  • 3 oz. Monica's chili! (about 120 kcals, about 15g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein powder in a large iced decaf coffee. I usually get the coffee from Publick Cup/Koffee Too because I pass it on the way to bar review class, but today I got it from Blue State. Like Starbucks, Blue State's coffee is very flavorful which is wonderful in general, but not great for the protein shake. I prefer weak coffee for this purpose. (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 3 oz. teriyaki chicken breast - this was insanely filling today (130 kcals, 24g protein)
  • Another scoop of Isopure dutch chocolate protein, this time in homemade instant decaf - I was in a chocolate mood today (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 2 oz. chopped shrimp in 1 tbsp. seasoned nonfat Fage yogurt, spicy brown mustard, apple cider vinegar, dill, rosemary, and other seasonings - reminiscent of shrimp salad, but with protein-rich Greek yogurt instead of cholesterol-rich mayo - on a few Romaine leaves (about 85 kcals, about 12g protein)

Total: 555 kcals, 101g protein, 72.8% kcals from protein.

I'd planned on upping my calories today, but it just didn't happen. I went for a long walk today too - 2 hours and 15 minutes. The first hour was at a nice brisk pace with lots of hills, but the last hour and 15 minutes was more of a stroll. I can definitely tell the hills worked my legs out well!

Sunday, June 14, 2009

What I Ate: 6/13/2009

  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein supplement in a large decaf iced coffee (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 1/2 hard-boiled egg (35 kcals, 3g protein), 1/2 slice American cheese (30 kcals, 2g protein), 1 Trader Joe's chicken sausage link (55 kcals, 7g protein)
  • 0.5 oz. Trader Joe's roasted and salted Marcona almonds with rosemary - these are insanely filling (about 95 kcals, about 3g protein)
  • 1 Primal Strips vegan seitan jerky in Texas BBQ flavor (81 kcals, 10g protein)
  • About 2.5 oz. beef tenderloin and cucumber salad at a birthday dinner in NYC - seriously, the most delicious beef I've ever had (about 175 kcals, about 19g protein)
  • 1 scoop Nectar fuzzy navel protein in fruit punch Crystal Light (95 kcals, 23g protein)

Total: 676 kcals, 92g protein, 54.4% kcals from protein.

I had a great gym trip yesterday afternoon: 65 minutes on the elliptical for a supposed burn of 590 calories. I also took a lot of stairs in the New York subways. I ate a bit more yesterday and justified it since I burned a lot of calories (though I'm aware the calorie counters on those elliptical machines are wrong most of the time...) 676 calories is the most I've had in a day since surgery.

I've been thinking about upping my calories anyway. My weight loss has kind of stalled, and there is a school of thought that at this stage we RNYers should be eating at least 800 calories a day. Some even say 1000. I've been scared to make this move, but I'd hate it if that's what's slowing my weight loss down.

Friday, June 12, 2009

What I Ate: 6/12/2009

  • 1/2 hard-boiled egg (35 kcals, 3g protein), 1/2 slice American cheese (30 kcals, 2g protein), 1 Trader Joe's chicken sausage link (55 kcals, 7g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein supplement in a Starbucks grande iced decaf americano with SF vanilla syrup - yay, back to Starbucks! But I won't do this again, at least not with the smaller grande size. I like the weaker Publick Cup coffee better with my shake but prefer Starbucks when I want to taste the coffee. (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 3 oz. Monica's chili! (about 125 kcals, about 17g protein)
  • 1 scoop Nectar fuzzy navel protein supplement in fruit punch Crystal Light (95 kcals, 23g protein)
  • 3 large sauteed shrimp (3 oz.) on a few romaine leaves with sweet & spicy dill vinaigrette - a repeat dinner from Tuesday with a touch of cayenne - sooooo good! (about 100 kcals, 16.5g protein)

Total: 550 kcals, 93.5g protein, 68.0% kcals from protein.

I also went back to the gym today! An hour on the elliptical for a supposed burn of 515 calories (back to long and slow, and I was studying Real Property too.)

Thursday, June 11, 2009

What I Ate: 6/11/2009

  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein supplement in a large decaf iced coffee, sadly not from Starbucks (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 1/2 hard-boiled egg (35 kcals, 3g protein), 1/2 slice American cheese (30 kcals, 2g protein), 1 Trader Joe's chicken sausage link (55 kcals, 7g protein)
  • 2.5 oz. chicken breast tenderloin cooked in Barilla tomato sauce (100 kcals, 18g protein)
  • 2 oz. Monica's chili! - I made this with lean ground beef and black soy beans, along with lots of tomatoes, herbs and spices - and with my special ingredient, instant decaf coffee (about 85 kcals, about 10g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein supplement in homemade instant decaf coffee (110 kcals, 25g protein)

Total: 525 kcals, 90g protein, 68.6% kcals from protein.

Wednesday, June 10, 2009

What I Ate: 6/10/2009

  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein supplement in a large decaf iced coffee, sadly not from Starbucks (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 1/2 hard-boiled egg (35 kcals, 3g protein), 1/2 slice American cheese (30 kcals, 2g protein), 1 Trader Joe's chicken sausage link (55 kcals, 7g protein)
  • 2.5 oz. chicken breast tenderloin cooked in Barilla tomato sauce (100 kcals, 18g protein)
  • 2 Bariatric Advantage chocolate calcium citrate chews (30 kcals, 0g protein)
  • 1 "Primal Strips" Thai Peanut vegan seitan jerky (74 kcals, 10g protein)
  • 1 scoop Nectar fuzzy navel protein powder in strawberry lemonade Target fake Crystal Light (90 kcals, 23g protein)

Total: 524 kcals, 88g protein, 67.2% kcals from protein.

I also went back to the gym today - finally! 45 minutes on the elliptical for a supposed burn of 411 calories. I worked out way too vigorously in the middle part of the workout, so I'm sure future calorie totals will be lower. I started to feel a bit lightheaded once. I knew I was way over the target heart rate. I need to buy a heart rate monitor, but they are so expensive and I'm broke at the moment. :-(

Race and short sleep duration increase the risk for obesity

WESTCHESTER, Ill. –According to a research abstract that will be presented on Monday, June 8, at SLEEP 2009, the 23rd Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies, race significantly influences the risk of obesity conferred by short sleep duration, with blacks having a greater risk than whites.

Results indicate that short sleep was associated with obesity, with the adjusted odds ratios for black Americans (1.78) and white Americans (1.43) showing that blacks had a 35 percent greater risk than whites of obesity associated with short sleep. The prevalence of obesity (body mass index of 30 or higher) was 52 percent for blacks and 38 percent for whites. The prevalence of short sleep (5 hours or less) was 12 percent for blacks and eight percent for whites.

What I Ate: 6/7/2009

  • 2 oz. Steph's jerk-inspired chicken breast (about 90 kcals, 16g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein powder mixed into Starbucks venti iced decaf americano with sugar-free vanilla syrup and a few packs of artificial sweetener (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 3 colossal shrimp (3 oz.) with peaches, red onion, cilantro, lime juice and zest, and nonfat Fage Greek yogurt on a romaine leaf - umm, this was so, so incredibly good! And it was gorgeous and tropical-looking too! Next time the portion will have to be smaller though - I was stuffed. (about 150 kcals, 19.5g protein)
  • 0.75 oz. Trader Joe's Marcona roasted and salted almonds with rosemary (135 kcals, 4.5g protein)
  • 1 scoop Nectar fuzzy navel protein powder in strawberry lemonade Target brand fake Crystal Light (90 kcals, 23g protein)

Total: 575 kcals, 88g protein, 61.2% kcals from protein.

I also went for a hilly walk outside today - it was gorgeous - for about 45 minutes to an hour.

What I Ate: 6/6/2009

  • 2 oz. cinnamon-barbecue chicken with about 0.5 oz. sauce, tomatoes, diced onion (about 100 kcals, 16g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate mixed into Starbucks venti iced decaf Americano with various artificial sweeteners (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 0.5 oz. Trader Joe's roasted and salted Marcona almonds with rosemary - my first foray back into the nut world. I was hesitant to go there because nuts have been a trigger food for me in the past, but this was fine. Half an ounce is actually a good amount of nuts. At first I was afraid they were going to make me sick, but they went down just fine. (about 95 kcals, about 3g protein)
  • 2 oz. jerk chicken, 1.5 oz. spinach, prepared by my roommate Steph! (about 130 kcals, 16g protein)
  • 2 strawberries and 1 kiwi as part of a fruit salad (60 kcals, 0.5g protein)
  • 1 scoop Nectar fuzzy navel in Crystal Light with a little Splenda added (90 kcals, 23g protein)

Total: 585 kcals, 83.5g protein, 57.1% kcals from protein.

My roommate had a dinner party this evening, which is the source of the jerk chicken, spinach, and fruit. I would have been better not having the fruit, but I'm cool with it as an occasional indulgence. I know some people are opposed to all fruit in the losing phase, but I'm not sure that I agree with that.

What I Ate: 6/4/2009

Random thought: Today is the 20th anniversary of the protest and massacres at Tiananmen Square.

Anyway, today I found out that my transmission is busted. And lots of drama ensued as a result. I'll spare you the details, but because of this my first meal was at 4:45 PM. Fortunately, because of the RNY I wasn't hungry. When I did eat, it was something greasy and salty but ostensibly "healthy" fast food from a highway rest station. I know I should have just stuck with protein shakes, but I was so stressed out and exhausted that I really wanted hot food. Thus...

  • Burger King "Tendergrill" chicken filet, about 3.5 oz - I ate this really slowly. It was quite greasy so I'm not sure how the fat is just 4 grams (150 kcals, 28g protein)
  • 1 scoop Nectar chocolate truffle protein powder mixed into my Starbucks venti decaf iced americano with Splenda, Sweet & Low, and Equal added (100 kcals, 23g protein)

Total: 250 kcals, 51g protein, 81.6% kcals from protein.

Tomorrow I should be back to my regularly scheduled meal plan. I really, really hope so at least.

What I Ate: 6/3/2009

In the midst of my move from DC to CT, my car broke down. This food report reflects the craziness of the situations somewhat, but not as much as the next one will...

  • 1 Garden Vegetable Boca patty - about 2.2 oz. (80 kcals, 12g protein)
  • 1 Garden Vegetable Boca patty (80 kcals, 12g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein powder, mixed into my Starbucks venti decaf iced Americano with sugar-free vanilla syrup (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • About 3/4 scoop Optimum 100% Whey protein powder in caramel toffee fudge (about 90 kcals, about 18g protein)

Total: 360 kcals, 67g protein, 74.4% kcals from protein.

What I Ate: 6/2/2009

The moving saga continues . . . it was supposed to be over by Sunday! It looks like I'll be getting out of here early tomorrow morning and starting bar class on Thursday - seven whole days late.

In other news, I've axed my hair, locs that had been growing for over 3 years. I'm turning over lots of new leaves, so it's time for a new 'do. I'm thinking short natural hairstyles, like this, or this, or this. I also plan to play with the color, but nothing outrageous. :-)

Anyway, on to the food!
  • 3 oz. Oscar Meyer Deli Fresh roast beef (about 103 kcals, about 17.2g protein)
  • 1 sample packet Whey Gourmet Arctic Cappucino Frappe protein powder in water - sort of pointless as rumors swirl that Whey Gourmet has gone out of business, but this was left over from my protein sample packet from Bariatric Eating. Fortunately, it was tasty, but it wasn't amazing like Syntha-6. I added extra water, cinnamon, Splenda, and sugar-free hazelnut syrup and then it tasted pretty good. (130 kcals, 21g protein)
  • 1 Mini Babybel Light cheese round (50 kcals, 6g protein) with 1 Mini Babybel Cheddar cheese round (70 kcals, 5g protein)
  • About 1 scoop Syntha-6 chocolate peanut butter protein powder in water - leftovers from Vitalady sample (200 kcals, 22g protein)

Total: 553 kcals, 71.2g protein, 51.5% kcals from protein.

Continued my protein-tasting experiment, but fortunately the Syntha-6 is now gone. It's so good, but it jacks my calories way up without sufficient payoff in the protein department. This chocolate peanut butter Syntha-6 has 6 grams of fat and 14g of carbs in a scoop (though 5g of the carbs is fiber, so at least it's a little something healthy.) I'm used to Nectar, which has no carbs or fat - all protein.

I'm now really excited about the new Inspire Peanut Butter Cookie protein. It will probably take me months to get it because it's so popular that it's backordered. I'm envisioning a delicious shake that I could sip on all day: 1 scoop Nectar chocolate truffle with 1 scoop Inspire peanut butter cookie. That would be 232 calories and 48g protein, much better stats than the Syntha-6 and hopefully just as tasty.

What I Ate: 6/1/2009

The organizational mess of my attempt to move continues.

  • 2 Mini Babybel Light cheese rounds (100 kcals, 12g protein)
  • 1 Bariatric Advantage Chocolate Calcium Citrate Chew (15 kcals, 0g protein)
  • 1.5 scoops Syntha-6 Cookies and Cream protein supplement - a sample from Vitalady. I could only stomach about 3/4 of the shake - couldn't finish it, so the stats are for 3/4 of 1.5 scoops (221 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 3 oz. Oscar Meyer Deli Fresh roast beef (about 103 kcals, about 17.2g protein)
  • 1 oz. Oscar Meyer Deli Fresh roast beef (about 35 kcals, about 5.7g protein)

Total: 474 kcals, 59.9g protein, 50.5% kcals from protein.

I did a mini protein-tasting today while I was moving and trying to get rid of stuff. I ordered a bunch of samples from Vitalady before surgery, but until today I'd tried only one of them. I also have a bunch of stuff left over from my BariatricEating.com protein starter kit, also ordered pre-op. In addition to the Syntha-6, listed above, I had a couple sips of Lean Dessert Banana Nut Bread protein shake. Unfortunately, I hated it. The fake banana taste was overwhelming. But generally, I think Lean Dessert might not be the right protein for me because of its consistency. It's very thick (ordinarily an asset) but it feels slimy in my mouth. I've tasted the Fresh Cinnamon Bun, Whipped Vanilla Cream, and Chocolate Coconut as well and they all have the same slippery texture.

Syntha-6 is sinfully delicious (real cookie bits in the Cookies and Cream) and extremely filling (I couldn't finish the whole shake because it felt like my stomach was about to burst), but I can't be having that many calories in one scoop - it really is sinful. It has a lot of carbs and fat as well. Maybe I'll buy a few baggies from Vitalady for an occasional treat, but I don't think I'll buy a canister. It ruined my percentage of calories from protein for today!

What I Ate: 5/31/2009

  • 2 oz. pan-cooked turkey breast - this felt like it was HUGE in my stomach, which is odd because I ate 3 oz. twice last night. Maybe because it was my first meal of the day (80 kcals, 16.3g protein)
  • 5 Bariatric Advantage Chocolate Calcium Citrate Chewy Bites (75 kcals, 0g protein)
  • 2.5 oz pan-cooked turkey breast (100 kcals, 20.8g protein)
  • 1 medium kiwi fruit (46 kcals, 0.9g protein)

Total: 301 kcals, 38g protein, 50.5% kcals from protein.

Both yesterday (5/31) and today (6/1), I've been an organizational mess trying to move all my stuff out of my apartment. Hence, eating wasn't great yesterday - a frighteningly low protein number. I'm trying to do better today. Will report back once the day is done.
