What I Ate: 8/21/2009

  • 1 scoop Inspire Chocolate Peanut Butter Fudge protein powder in 4 oz. water with ice - this was KILLER! I daydreamed about it for the rest of the day! I tend to have lump problems with Inspire proteins, but I made this by gradually adding the powder to the water and using a wire whisk, and it was perfection. I added the ice to make it colder after I mixed it.(127 kcals, 26g protein)
  • 3 oz. Monica's mushroom chicken with the yummy sauce (about 160 kcals, 26g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein powder in iced decaf americano with sugar-free vanilla syrup from E-City Java (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 2 oz. leftover rotisserie chicken breast (about 85 kcals, 16g protein) and about 1 cup edamame beans in the pods (about 120 kcals, 11g protein) - I overate! Argh!
  • 1 scoop Inspire Ice Cream Sandwich protein powder in 4 oz. water with ice (126 kcals, 30g protein)

Total: 728 kcals, 134g protein, 73.6% kcals from protein.

Those stats are insane! It's a LOT of calories for me, but also with the most protein I've had in one day since surgery. I'm not sure this is good - I've heard that too much protein is bad for the kidneys. Hopefully I'm not messing myself up.

I went to Gold's this morning and worked out on the elliptical for 45 minutes, for a total of supposedly 426 calories burned.

What I Ate: 8/20/2009

  • 10 large shrimp (75 kcals, 14g protein) with roasted yellow tomato and garlic sauce (about 30 kcals, 0g protein)
  • 3 oz. rosemary pork tenderloin - leftovers from last night (140 kcals, 24g protein)
  • About 16 pecan halves - ARGH moment of weakness at my grandma's house!!! (110 kcals, 1g protein)
  • 3 oz. "Monica's mushroom chicken" with sauce made with mushrooms, fat-free Greek yogurt, lemons, rosemary, shallots, garlic, and other tastiness - as "Rach" would say, "Yumm-o!" (about 160 kcals, 26g protein)
  • 1 scoop Inspire Ice Cream Sandwich protein in 4 oz. ice water (126 kcals, 30g protein)

Total: 641 calories, 95g protein, 59.3% kcals from protein.

At Gold's, I went 15 minutes on the elliptical! I accidentally left my iPod at home and could not bring myself to do a whole workout without it. But later that night I did two additional ten-minute workouts from Jennifer Galardi's 10 Minute Solution: Dance It Off and Tone It Up. I did the "Sexy Slim Down" and the "High Energy Fat Burner," and I also did portions of the "Dancer's Abs" and "Upper Body Tone Up." I got a decent amount of sweat in, so I figure it was a decent sub for the rest of my elliptical workout. The choreography was a little hard for me to follow, but I had fun with it.

What I Ate: 8/19/2009

  • 1 scoop Inspire Ice Cream Sandwich protein powder in homemade iced decaf (126 kcals, 30g protein)
  • 2.5 oz. orange roughy (63 kcals, 12g protein) with roasted yellow tomato and garlic sauce (25 kcals, 0g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein in iced decaf americano with sugar-free Irish Cream syrup from E-City Java (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 1 sugar-free Jolly Rancher (9 kcals, 0g protein)
  • 3.5 oz. pork tenderloin chop (165 kcals, 28g protein)
  • About 3 oz. rotisserie chicken, mostly breast meat but some thigh (about 120 kcals, 24g protein)
  • 1 piece Russell Stover sugar-free chocolate candy (38 kcals, 0g protein)

Total: 656 calories, 119 g protein, 72.6% kcals from protein.

I also got an eleven-day gym membership at Gold's Gym in Anderson, which is close to the house and really nice! It was just 25 dollars for a week, and the nice man at the counter gave me some extra days for free! I didn't even ask him, but this will carry me through the duration of my time in Anderson except for Sunday, August 30, when I probably wouldn't have time to work out anyway.

I started back off slowly - 35 minutes on the elliptical for a supposed burn of about 335 calories.

What I Ate: 8/18/2009

I'm posting these from the coffee shop. I'm visiting with my family for the next ten days or so, and they don't have the internet at home!

  • About 2 oz. halibut (80 kcals, 15g protein), cipolline onion relish (about 25 kcals, 0g protein), and sour broccolini (about 30 kcals) - leftovers from last night
  • Seafood salad from my favorite Columbia, SC restaurant, Motor Supply Company. The salad had shrimp, calamari, oysters, and salmon that were poached in a seafood broth, served over spinach and with a sweet onion vinaigrette on the side. I ate very little of this, but I had some of the vinaigrette and also two sips of a cold cucumber/peach soup. Calories and protein are *complete* guesstimation, though I know this was quite healthful. (about 100 kcals, 15g protein)
  • About 2 oz. orange roughy (50 kcals, 9.5g protein) with roasted garlic and yellow tomato sauce (about 30 kcals, 0g protein)
  • About 20 pistachios (about 80 kcals, 2g protein)
  • 5 sugar-free Jolly Ranchers (44 kcals, 0g protein)
  • 1 piece of Russell Stover sugar-free chocolate - this belongs to my diabetic stepfather. I wouldn't buy this kind of stuff myself. Honestly, these aren't too tempting because they taste like they are sugar-free. Compare with sugar-free Reese's Cups, which are totally delicious... (38 kcals, 0g protein)

Total: Roughly 477 kcals, 41.5g protein, 34.8% kcals from protein. :-( :-( :-(

What I Ate: 8/17/2009

  • 3 slices of Jennie-O turkey bacon (60 kcals, 9g protein) with 1 stick of lowfat string cheese (60 kcals, 8g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein in a grande iced decaf americano with sugar-free vanilla syrup (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 1.5 oz. roasted, unsalted pistachios in shells (about 120 kcals, 4.3g protein) - probably not a good call because of all the calories from fat, but I was starving!
  • 2.5 oz. seared halibut (about 100 kcals, 18g protein) with garlic sour broccolini (about 25 kcals, 0g protein) and cipolline onion relish with basil and oregano (about 30 kcals, 0g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein in homemade iced decaf (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 3 sugar-free Lifesavers (22.5 kcals, 0g protein)

Total: 637.5 kcals, 89.3g protein, 56.0% kcals from protein.

I'm getting back there...I'll get there. Although, tomorrow I'm eating out for lunch, so we'll see how it goes.

Lots of Catching up To Do!

I just got my Internet connected at my apartment! Now I can go back to keeping track of my food on here instead of random pieces of paper, which I often misplace. It's been a crazy time - I haven't exercised since last Saturday in Jekyll Island, and since then I've moved into my Columbia apartment and then spent last Thursday through yesterday (Sunday) in Charleston for another wedding.

I definitely have to get my life back together. This morning, the scale said 239! Who gains weight 4 months out of gastric bypass?!

I wrote down everything I've eaten since August 10, but I left one of my bags in Charleston (argh) and one of the missing items is my food list. If I ever get that bag back, I will list that food then. For now, I can tell you that one of my staple foods was lowfat string cheese.

Will start today with August 17, 2009 food reported tonight.

What I Ate: 8/9/2009

  • Scrambled eggs from the hotel - they seemed to have additives like milk and maybe butter, so they weren't a perfect food for us. But at least they are high-protein and they were very filling. My portion was about 2 eggs' worth. I also had a tiny bit of a pork sausage link, but I didn't like the taste.
  • 1 set of crab legs, again from Jekyll Island's "Rah Bar" - again, very filling. I wasn't hungry again until 8:30 PM and I had these at around 2 PM.
  • 2 scoops of Isopure dutch chocolate protein powder in a grande iced decaf americano with SF vanilla syrup from Starbucks!
  • About 1.5 oz. turkey jerky

Also, I made it to Columbia, SC and move into my apartment tomorrow! Yay.

What I Ate: 8/8/2009

  • 1 rack of snow crab legs at a raw bar in Jekyll Island, GA, right by the water. It was awesome!
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein powder in fake Sbux grande iced decaf americano with SF vanilla syrup
  • 4 canteloupe melon balls
  • 1 small green salad with cucumber, cherry tomatoes, and Italian dressing
  • 2 small lambchops with creamed spinach
  • 1 stick of lowfat string cheese
Total: I'm not sure. Today was the Holmes-Kidd wedding and it rocked!

Went to the hotel gym this morning for what turned out to be a lackluster workout, but I guess it's better than nothing. 35 minutes on the treadmill and a few resistance exercises. But there was lots of dancing later, so lots of calories were burned in that process.

What I Ate: 8/7/2009

  • About 1/2 cup of my mom's stir-fry with chicken breast, broccoli, and pea pods
  • 1 package of Lance pistachios (120 kcals, 6g protein)
  • About 1.5 oz. turkey jerky
  • Most of a hamburger patty with cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, and spicy mustard; a few bean pods from a bean salad, and about 1/2 the meat from a barbecued pork rib. This was at my friends' rehearsal dinner! :-)

Another Reason that I'm Grateful for RNY

I just found out that a law school classmate has been diagnosed with lymphoma.

My classmate sent out an event on Facebook asking people to sign up to be bone marrow donors, and on his blog noted the special need for minority donors. I went to the donation website and immediately went to the health guidelines, thinking that maybe because I had major surgery less than 4 months ago, I wouldn't qualify. The guidelines didn't mention anything about recent surgeries, but it did have weight guidelines. I just knew that the weight limits were going to disqualify me.

Amazingly, the upper limit for someone with a height of 5'7'' is 255 pounds. Yesterday morning, I was 237.4 pounds, so I signed up. Thanks to this surgery, not only can my own life be lengthened and improved, but maybe I can help someone else's be lengthened and improved as well. Which is one more reason that RNY is pretty awesome.

By the way, sign up to donate bone marrow at http://www.marrow.org/.

What I Ate: 8/6/2009

  • 1/4 cup Egg Beater omelet with some of the meat from 2 KFC "grilled" chicken drumsticks. My mom bought the chicken last night and wanted me to taste it, so I tried it this way. It was okay, but stuff I cook at home is much tastier! (about 165 kcals, about 21g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein powder in 16 oz. iced decaf americano with sugar-free Irish cream syrup from E-City Java - yumm-o! ECJ isn't as good as Sbux, but it's close and I love the ambiance. (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 1/4 cup pecans (about 196 kcals, 2.5g protein) and 1 large peach (about 65 kcals, 1.5g protein). This made my stomach very upset. I was at my grandmother's house and she literally has NO protein foods! And who knew pecans have such a ridiculous number of calories! Argh!!!
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein powder in 16 oz. iced decaf americano with sugar-free French vanilla syrup from E-City Java (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 11 small shrimp with a sauce made of roasted yellow tomatoes, roasted garlic, basil, apple cider vinegar, and a dab of Splenda - soooo amazingly delicious! (about 85 kcals, about 11g protein)

Total: 731 calories, 86g protein, 47.1% kcals from protein. Terrible!

What I've Eaten! 7/30-8/5/2009

Hey y'all!

I've been without internet for the past several days, but I've tried to keep track of what I've eaten. Unfortunately, (1) my food scale is in storage, so I haven't known the exact size of my portions; and (2) I'm disorganized, so I've misplaced the pieces of paper where I wrote down what I ate. There was a big ordeal with my car too that left me sleeping at JFK airport again and eating from Terminals 3 and 4 at a quite irregular schedule. Then I went back to New Haven, moved all my stuff out of the apartment and storage, and then drove from CT back to SC. I get on the road again tomorrow morning for the MPRE and my Southern wedding tour. Lots of craziness!

At any rate, here's a pretty good estimation of what I've eaten over the past few days:

Thursday, July 30

  • 1 oz. teriyaki beef jerky (80 kcals, 14g protein)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein in Sbux tall iced decaf americano with SF vanilla syrup (110 kcals, 25g protein)
  • 2 scoops Isopure dutch chocolate protein in Sbux venti iced decaf american with SF vanilla syrup (220 kcals, 50g protein)
  • Tom yum gai soup from a Thai restaurant in San Francisco - this was my post-bar treat!
Friday, July 31

  • Toppings from a chef salad - a few slices of deli ham, deli turkey, and cheddar cheese and 1 hard-boiled egg
  • A few slices of deli chicken breast and 1/2 slice of Swiss cheese (toppings from a sandwich I got from Terminal 2, international arrivals)
  • About 1/3 cup of pistachios in shells. These went down a lot more smoothly than almonds and cashews, but that may have been because I was absolutely starving when I ate them.
Saturday, August 1

  • 1 and 1/2 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1 KFC tender roast filet with tomato (took the bread off, obvi - and this was crap food, but it was that or pay $35 for Terminal 4's roasted salmon)
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein powder in tall iced decaf
  • 1 slice deli smoked honey turkey breast and 4 slices deli chicken breast (finishing off my leftovers)
  • 1 apple maple chicken sausage link
Sunday, August 2

  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein powder in tall iced decaf
  • 2 chicken apple maple sausages
  • Chicken breast chunks with a roasted purple pepper and roasted garlic sauce, with dandelion greens and onion

Monday, August 3

  • I ate something protein-heavy for breakfast this morning, but cannot recall what it was...
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein powder in Sbux tall iced decaf americano with SF vanilla syrup
  • 6 "chicken nuggets" (sauteed pieces of chicken breast tenderloin with lots of spices) and "onion rings" (very lightly sauteed Vidalia onions, cooked in a very hot wok with a little nonstick spray) with "honey mustard" sauce (spicy mustard, Splenda, sage, worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, cinnamon, and my "secret ingredients" aka stuff I don't remember putting in)
Tuesday, August 4

  • 6 "chicken nuggets" and "onion rings"
  • 1 stick of string cheese
  • 6 "chicken nuggets" and "onion rings"
  • 1 stick of string cheese
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein in a large iced decaf coffee from Cinnabon - I was on the road!
Wednesday, August 5

  • 6 "chicken nuggets"
  • 6 "chicken nuggets"
  • 1 scoop Isopure dutch chocolate protein in a medium iced decaf coffee with SF Irish cream syrup from E-City Java and 1/2 large peach
  • 2 small beef steak medallions ("beef eye of round") and 1/4 large peach
